Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – February 6, Leviticus 19, “Provisions For The Poor”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Leviticus 19) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Leviticus is all about keeping God’s people in the right relationship with God and one another through offerings, sacrifices and rules of conduct. In order to guide the carrying out of these instructions God provided priests, or Levites, to teach the people and to devote themselves to following God’s laws.

God has such a heart for the poor.  How did He teach His people to care for the poor among them?

Ask the children…

What did God tell His people to do when harvesting their crops?

“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. 10 It is the same with your grape crop—do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground.” (Leviticus 19:9, 10)

Who would this help?

“Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 16:3019:10)

God has always had a heart for the poor and those who had trouble caring for their own needs.  He even instructed his people not to harvest every last bit of grain or grape of their bounty.  He told them to leave some behind so that the poor and those who were far from home and family could come and pick what was left to meet their needs.

Ask your children how they feel about those who are poor?  Who do they know or see in their community who are poor?  How can they take of some of their bounty and provide for the poor?  If they don’t know, do some brainstorming with them.  This isn’t about caring for nameless people, but caring for souls the way God cares for them.
