This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Leviticus 23) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Leviticus is all about keeping God’s people in the right relationship with God and one another through offerings, sacrifices and rules of conduct. In order to guide the carrying out of these instructions God provided priests, or Levites, to teach the people and to devote themselves to following God’s laws.
Everybody needs rest. Even God rested on the 7th day, not because He was tired, but because He wanted to enjoy all that He had created. What instructions did God give His people about rest?
Ask the children…
What day did the Lord declare as a rest day and what were they to do that day?
“You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of complete rest, an official day for holy assembly.” (Leviticus 23:3)
Who’s day was this?
“It is the Lord’s Sabbath day, and it must be observed wherever you live.” (Leviticus 23:3)
God provided a day of rest as a gift. God would provide enough for His people through 6 days of work and 7th day was left for worship and fellowship. Those who thought they needed to work 7 days a week were not trusting God.
Now that every day of the week is the Sabbath because of what Jesus did on the cross, what day do most Christians observe the day of rest? Most do it on Sunday since this is the day Jesus rose, but it is not required to be done that day. Ask your children how they rest on the day they choose to rest? Attend a worship service, sing songs of praise, read the word together, pray, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, etc.?
