This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Genesis 1) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses wrote the first five books in the Bible. The very first book, Genesis, emphasizes beginnings. Beginning of the world and mankind, beginning of sin (man’s disobedience to God) and the beginning of God’s special nation.
Chapter 1 of Genesis answers those two most asked questions from all mankind, where did I come from and why am I here?
Ask the children…
Where did mankind come from?
“So God created human beings[c] in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
What was the purpose of God creating mankind?
“Then God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.’” (Genesis 1:28)
So we are made in the image of God. No other creature is made in God’s image. We have the ability to choose, the ability to have a relationship with God and the ability to rule like God. And so God has given each us the purpose of ruling over His creation for Him and expanding His heavenly kingdom over all the earth.
Ask your children how they feel about ruling over creation? What do they think that means? We are to care for God’s creatures, our planet and one another just the way God would. Read Matthew 28:18-20 and see how Jesus told us to act this out. Maybe you could make this your key theme verse for the new year.
