This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Genesis 39) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses wrote the first five books in the Bible. The very first book, Genesis, emphasizes beginnings. Beginning of the world and mankind, beginning of sin (man’s disobedience to God) and the beginning of God’s special nation.
Joseph was the favorite of Jacob’s twelves sons. Because of this the other brothers were jealous and one day they kidnapped Joseph and sold him into slavery to some Ishmaelites who in turn took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar. Joseph had so much favor from the Lord that Potiphar put him in charge of his whole household. Again Joseph was unjustly treated when he was accused of a crime he didn’t commit and put in prison. Our story picks up here.
Ask the children…
How did the Lord treat Joseph while in prison and what happened?
“But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. 22 Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.” (Genesis 39:21, 22)
What justice did God give Joseph despite man’s injustice?
“The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.” (Genesis 39:23)
We will all face situations where we receive injustice. The issue that faces us just like it did Joseph is, how are we going to respond? Are we just going to complain and sulk or are we going to trust that God is going to meet us in the injustice and make all things work together for good?
Ask your children how they would have felt if they had been Joseph? Ask them if they can think of time when they felt unjustly treated? How did they handle it? Having heard this story of Joseph, how could they have handled it? What will they do going forward?
