This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Genesis 45) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses wrote the first five books in the Bible. The very first book, Genesis, emphasizes beginnings. Beginning of the world and mankind, beginning of sin (man’s disobedience to God) and the beginning of God’s special nation.
Joseph had been sold into slavery by his brothers and eventually ended up in jail in Epypt. Through interpreting dreams of Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and eventually Pharaoh, Joseph become second in command in Egypt. But this is not just to honor Joseph, God had a larger plan in mind. When a great famine came over all the land, Egypt, because they followed the Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams, were the only ones who were prepared. As a result Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. When they found out that their brother Joseph was in command, they were terrified what he would do to them.
Ask the children…
What did Joseph say was God’s plan for his coming to Egypt?
“But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.” (Genesis 45:5)
Instead of giving his brothers what they deserved, how does Joseph treat his brothers?
“Weeping with joy, he embraced Benjamin, and Benjamin did the same. 15 Then Joseph kissed each of his brothers and wept over them, and after that they began talking freely with him.” (Genesis 45:14, 15)
Joseph could have thrown his brothers into prison and he would have been justified in doing it. But he didn’t. He chose instead to focus on God’s plan for bringing him to Egypt to save his family from the famine. He chose to focus on restoring his relationship with his brothers.
Ask your children if there is anyone they are holding a grudge against? Do they think they are right in feeling that way? How could God be using this situation to mold their character and to prepare them for doing something important for God? Make the choice to forgive that other person or group by faith and trust God for what how He is going to use it. Now give that choice to God.
