This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Exodus 2) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Exodus is all about God’s miraculously assisting His special nation (Israel) to leave their 400 year slavery in Egypt in order to return to their promised land. Along the way God provides His people with a special tent of meeting and specific jobs and ceremonies for them to perform to enable Him to remain with them.
It has been 400 years since God’s people have come to Egypt to escape a severe famine. The current Pharaoh does not remember the favor that God’s people had with the Egyptians through their Joseph. God’s people have become a mighty nation and the Egyptians are afraid of them and therefore have made them slaves and treat them harshly.
Ask the children…
How does God respond to His people’s cries for help?
“Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God. 24 God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” (Exodus 2:23, 24)
What does God decide that it is time to do?
“He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act.” (Exodus 2:25)
400 years may seem like a long time for God to decide to lead His people out of Egypt, but it was the perfect time. The people had grown to be a mighty nation. Their blood line was pure because the Egyptians despised the Israelites and forced them to live separately. The people collectively were crying out to God, they were ready for God to do something for them.
Ask your children if they are crying out to God for something that they care about? God loves to hear the cries of His people. He is compassionate towards hearts that are burdened and choose to trust in Him. Spend some time unburdening your hearts today to God and see what happens.
