This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Exodus 4) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Exodus is all about God’s miraculously assisting His special nation (Israel) to leave their 400 year slavery in Egypt in order to return to their promised land. Along the way God provides His people with a special tent of meeting and specific jobs and ceremonies for them to perform to enable Him to remain with them.
God has heard His people’s cry to be released from their 400 year slavery in Egypt. He chooses Moses to lead them out of slavery. But Moses has doubts about God’s choice. First God has to convince Moses that He is God’s choice and that God will provide what Moses’ needs to convince the Israelites and the mighty Pharaoh.
Ask the children…
What doubts does Moses have?
“But Moses protested again, ‘What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?” (Exodus 4:1)
What does God have Moses do to convince Moses that God will provide the power he needs?
“Then the Lord asked him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ ‘A shepherd’s staff,’ Moses replied. ‘Throw it down on the ground,’ the Lord told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back. Then the Lord told him, ‘Reach out and grab its tail.’ So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a shepherd’s staff in his hand.” (Exodus 4:2-4)
God loves to use people like us to do the impossible. He especially loves to use people who don’t feel prepared to do what God wants them to do. He does that because He wants us to rely on Him for the power so that in the end, God gets the glory, not us. Our job is to trust.
Ask your children if God is calling them to do something they are afraid to do? What is it? How did He call them? What will it take for them to trust God to provide what they need to step out in faith? Begin crying out to God to show you His power that He will provide.
