This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Exodus 9) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Exodus is all about God’s miraculously assisting His special nation (Israel) to leave their 400 year slavery in Egypt in order to return to their promised land. Along the way God provides His people with a special tent of meeting and specific jobs and ceremonies for them to perform to enable Him to remain with them.
God uses every situation and person to reveal His glory. Even mighty Pharaoh’s hard heart was no match for what God wanted to show Egypt.
Ask the children…
God brought plague after plague but each time something happened to Pharaoah, what was it?
“But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and just as the Lord had predicted to Moses, Pharaoh refused to listen.” (Exodus 9:12)
God hardened Pharaoh’s heart in order to show all of Egypt that they couldn’t stand against the power that brought 10 plagues on them. What was the result of Pharaoh’s hard heart?
“Because his heart was hard, Pharaoh refused to let the people leave, just as the Lord had predicted through Moses.” (Exodus 9:35)
When anyone has a hard heart toward God, they will resist what God wants to do. It can not only happen to mighty Pharaoh, but it can happen to us. Fortunately, God keeps knocking on the doors of our hearts because He loves us. Sometimes He just quietly tells us that He loves us and other times He brings something stronger to get our attention.
Ask your children if God they are resisting in their hearts something that God wants to do in their lives? Encourage them to confess their hardness of heart to God and to let God’s lovingkindness soften their hearts so they can willingly follow God’s plan for their lives.
