Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – January 30, Exodus 32, “The Golden Calf”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Exodus 32) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Exodus is all about God’s miraculously assisting His special nation (Israel) to leave their 400 year slavery in Egypt in order to return to their promised land. Along the way God provides His people with a special tent of meeting and specific jobs and ceremonies for them to perform to enable Him to remain with them.

While Moses was up on the moutain receiving the 10 commandments from the Lord, the people were impatient having to wait 40 days for Moses to return.  They persuaded Aaron to make them a golden calf to worship.

Ask the children…

What did Moses do when he returned from the mountain and saw what the people had done?

“When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing, and he burned with anger. He threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain.” (Exodus 32:19)

What did he make the people do?

“He took the calf they had made and burned it. Then he ground it into powder, threw it into the water, and forced the people to drink it.” (Exodus 32:20)

Why was Moses so angry?  Because the people had so easily turned their backs on God to worship idols when Moses had just spent 40 days in God’s presence.  He knew how much God cared for this people and they had completely totally ignored this and turned their backs on God.  He made them drink this golden water as a natural consequence of their sin so they would not forget what they had done.

Ask your children if they can remember any natural consequences they have received for their disobedience?  Do they still remember what happened?  God wants us to remember His faithfulness even when we are in a tight spot and begin to lose faith that God is with us and will take care of us.
