Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – January 7, Genesis 17, “New Names”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Genesis 17) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: God inspired Moses wrote the first five books in the Bible. The very first book, Genesis, emphasizes beginnings. Beginning of the world and mankind, beginning of sin (man’s disobedience to God) and the beginning of God’s special nation.

In today’s culture, people select names because they like the sound or they remind them of someone they loved or because they want to be different.  In Abram’s times names really meant something, especially if someone changed your name.

Ask the children…

Why did God change Abram’s name?

“What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham,[a] for you will be the father of many nations.” (Genesis 17:5)

Abraham means ‘father of many’, which he became.  Why did God change Sarai’s name?

“Then God said to Abraham, ‘Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah.[c] 16 And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.'” (Genesis 17:15, 16)

Sarah would be come mother of kings so she was to be called ‘princess’ which is what Sarah means.

Ask your children if they know what their name means?  If you don’t know, look it up on the internet.  Regardless of their earthly name, God has called them His son or daughter, priests to God and in the future kings and queens.  As christians, we are royalty.

  1. Hi, loved this one. Thanks for posting. I have just started a blog called “gospel story sacks” where I record the devotions I am doing with my children. At the moment we are working our way through “the Jesus story bible” and doing activities to reinforce the message. Would you mind if I used your “new names” devotion as part of my Abraham post? I will reference it as by Hooked on the book.

Absolutely. Go ahead and use it. I love your idea of doing the devotions and recording them. Blessings, Jack
