This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Genesis 22) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses wrote the first five books in the Bible. The very first book, Genesis, emphasizes beginnings. Beginning of the world and mankind, beginning of sin (man’s disobedience to God) and the beginning of God’s special nation.
God gave Abraham an opportunity to have his faith tested so that he could grow. God told Abraham to take Isaac up to a mountain and there to offer him as a burnt offering.
Ask the children…
What did Abraham say when Isaac asked him where the burnt offering was?
“‘God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,’ Abraham answered. And they both walked on together.” (Genesis 22:8)
How far was Abraham willing to go in his trust of God and as a result what did God say?
“And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. 11 At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Yes,’ Abraham replied. ‘Here I am!’ ‘Don’t lay a hand on the boy!’ the angel said. ‘Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.’” (Genesis 18:13, 14)
Abraham believed God even to the point of killing his son because he knew God would provide, either by bringing Isaac back to life or by providing another lamb, which God did.
Ask your children how far they are willing to go in trusting God? With the power of the Holy Spirit inside them, they can trust God just like Abraham did.
