This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Joshua 10) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: The book of Joshua is a story of war and peace. In the first 12 chapters the people of Israel conquer their Promised Land (Canaan). There are 3 military campaigns and they defeat more than 30 enemy armies. Joshua is their new leader and he is strong and courageous. The people learn that victory comes through trusting in the Lord rather than military might. In the final 12 chapters peace reigns as the people divide up their new homeland.
Joshua and the army of Israel went north and south in Israel defeating enemy kings. But they didn’t do it on their own.
Ask the children…
How great was Joshua’s victory?
“So Joshua conquered the whole region—the kings and people of the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills,[d] and the mountain slopes.” (Joshua 10:40)
Why was Joshua’s victory so great?
“Joshua conquered all these kings and their land in a single campaign, for the Lord, the God of Israel, was fighting for his people.” (Joshua 10:42)
They key to all spiritual victory here on earth is God’s presence and His fighting for us. Joshua was obedient to do all that God asked him to. As a result God was with Joshua and the people in their military campaigns and no army could stand before them. God ask the same thing of us. Walk by faith and obedience and see the glory of the Lord destroy any enemies that keep us from taking the territory that God has given to us.
Ask your children what territory God has given them that they are fighting for? Maybe it is a character quality, or a skill they are developing, or a friendship, or a particulary hard task. Do they sense the Lord’s presence in the battle? Why or why not? What would it take to know that Jesus is fighting with them? Spend some time asking God show His presense and glory.
