Background: The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church at Rome that he had never been to. He wrote to explain the signficance of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. He did this with a series of question and answers.
Paul challenges to Romans regarding why they would consider going back into a sinful lifestyle of slavery now that they have been freed from it.
Ask the children…
What question does Paul give to the Roman church?
“Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey?” (Romans 6:16a)
And how does Paul answer his own question?
“You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.” (Romans 6:16b)
Now that you have been set free from being slaves to sin, why would you go back into that slavery? Instead you have been set free to obey God and to enjoy the fruit of God’s blessings as His children.
Ask your children how they feel about the practice of slavery? Ask them how they feel about the fact that they were slaves to sin before God freed them from that slavery? Ask if they would want to go back to being slaves to sin (disobeying God)?
