Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – November 18, I Corinthians 3, “Christian Unity”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (I Corinthians 3) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: Corinth was a great commercial center and Paul had planted this church in Corinth during his second missionary journey.  He wrote this letter to the church at Corinth to deal with several issues the church was facing; problems of disunity, problems with immorality, problems with gifts and worship, problems with errors in teaching.

The first problem Paul dealt with was the disunity in the church that was caused by those who chose to follow their leaders instead of Christ.

Ask the children…

Who were the Corinthians following?

“When one of you says, ‘I am a follower of Paul,’ and another says, ‘I follow Apollos,’ aren’t you acting just like people of the world?” (1 Corinthians 3:4)

What did Paul say about this disunity and who should they be following?

“After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. 6 I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:5, 6)

Even in our churches it is easy to become man centered rather than God centered.  When we see the gifting that God has put upon His servants, we can begin to worship these gifted men and women instead of the one who gave them the gifting.  That is what the world does and should not be found in the body of Christ.  It is idol worship.

As a family, identify some ways that the church todays glorifies men and women instead of God.  You might think of they way we focus on Christian music artists or how we follow some preachers or writers or evangelists and put down others and as a result cause divisions.  Think of some ways that you can bring back unity in the church by focusing solely on Christ.
