Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – November 25, 2 Corinthians 12, “Power In Weakness”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (2 Corinthians 12) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: Corinth was a great commercial center and Paul had planted this church in Corinth during his second missionary journey. He wrote this 2nd letter to the church to defend his apostleship and his authority in ministry.

Paul had gone through so much for the Corinthians.  He had braved so many things on their behelf and God had always been sufficient.  Now we see possibly Paul’s greatest test and greatest learning experience.

Ask the children…

What was Paul given and why was it given to him?

“So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.” (2 Corinthians 12:7)

What did Paul ask God to do and when God didn’t do what Paul asked, what did Paul conclude?

“Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” (2 Corinthians 12:8, 9)

We don’t know exactly what the ‘thorn in the flesh’ was that God allowed in Paul’s body, but we do know that it was a major weakness for Paul and that he wanted it removed.  God didn’t remove it however so that Paul could learn further humility and so that Paul could experience the strength of Christ that was more than enough for him.  So much so that Paul boasted about his weakness because Christ’s strength became more visible as a result.

Ask your children if they know what it is like to have a sickness that takes a long time to heal?  How did it feel?  What if you had a sickness that you couldn’t get rid of?  How would that make you rely upon God even more?  That is what Paul had to do and it made him even stronger.  To read a modern day story look up Joni Ericksen Tada and read about her accident and her life living as a quadrapalegic.
