Background: Matthew is the first book in the New Testament and was written by Matthew to carefully document that Jesus is in fact the long awaited Messiah and fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophecies.
In this section Matthew documents the lineage of Jesus through King David and Abraham, his birth from a virgin in the prophesied town of Bethlehem, but also something very special about the Messiah’s being crowned by God.
Ask the children…
How does God affirm the Jesus is the Messiah and King?
“After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened[g] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.” (Matthew 3:16)
The Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus like a crown and what does God say about who Jesus is?
“And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.’” (Matthew 3:17)
Jesus is God’s son. Isn’t that all we need to know about who He is? Not only that, He is the dearly loved Son who brings joy to God.
Ask your children to describe who they think Jesus is? Does Jesus bring them great joy? Take some time to tell each other all the things about Jesus that brings you joy.
