This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Mark 15) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Mark writes to involve the reader in the intensity of the miraculous life of Christ. He focuses more on what Jesus does than what He says, especially His service and sacrifice.
Two amazing things happened just before and after the death of Jeus on the cross.
Ask the children…
What happened just before Jesus’ death?
“At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.” (Mark 15:33)
What happened right after Jesus’ death?
“And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.” (Mark 15:38 )
Before the death of Jesus the world was still in darkness. They were far away from God and living according to Satan’s lies and their spirits had not yet come alive. When Jesus died the curtain in the temple was torn in two. This curtain blocked the way to the most holy place in the temple that even the High Priest could only go into once per year. Now the way into God’s holy place had been opened by the death of Jesus to anyone who would believe in Him and allow His blood to cover their sin. That is amazing. Since that time, all of history has been changed.
Take your children into your darkest closet and turn off the lights. Ask them how this feels? Imagine that this was case for 3 hours in the whole world. Then the lights came back on when Jesus died and temple curtain was torn. Everyone started yelling and they heard the curtain had been torn from top to bottom by God. Ask your children how they feel now? That is what Christ wants to do in our hearts every day. Praise Him for His death for us and release into God’s holy presence.
