Background: Luke the doctor was a missionary companion of the apostle Paul. He wrote the book of Acts also. He focuses this account of the life of Jesus on His humanity and how Jesus understands our weaknesses and cares about every need that we have.
Jesus had come to set people free from their sins and yet many of Jews would not believe.
Ask the children…
How did Jesus feel about this?
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.” (Luke 13:34)
What does Jesus say is going to happen to those in Jerusalem who do not believe?
“And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Luke 13:35)
Jesus wants all to believe in Him. It is especially upsetting to Him that the very Jews who’s ancestors rejected the prophets who came before Him, are now rejecting Jesus. He felt like a mother hen who wanted to gather together her little chicks and protect them.
Ask your children if they know someone who refuses to believe in Jesus? How do they feel about that person? Do they have the same love for them that Jesus does?
