This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Luke 19) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Luke the doctor was a missionary companion of the apostle Paul. He wrote the book of Acts also. He focuses this account of the life of Jesus on His humanity and how Jesus understands our weaknesses and cares about every need that we have.
Jesus knew that great wealth can be a stumbling block to people. They are tempted to rely on their wealth to take care of them rather than on God. Zacchaeus was such a man. He was a tax gatherer and a cheat. Everyone hated him. But when he encountered Jesus something strange happened.
Ask the children…
What did Zacchaeus promise to the Lord after Jesus had come to his house to have dinner?
“I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have overcharged people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!'” (Luke 19:8)
And what was Jesus’ response?
“Salvation has come to this house today, for this man has shown himself to be a son of Abraham. And I, the Son of Man, have come to seek and save those like him who are lost.” (Luke 19:9, 10)
Zacchaeus had experienced what worldly wealth could bring him; no peace, rejection by others and a hard heart. He chose to give all that up in favor of knowing the love of Jesus and the abundant life He offered.
Ask your children if they are holding onto some earthly thing that is keeping them from fully giving themselves to Jesus? It could be money, or possessions, or even a talent that they won’t relinquish to Jesus. Ask them if they, like Zacchaeus will commit that resource to the Lord so they can have all the life Jesus offers?
