This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Luke 23) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Luke the doctor was a missionary companion of the apostle Paul. He wrote the book of Acts also. He focuses this account of the life of Jesus on His humanity and how Jesus understands our weaknesses and cares about every need that we have.
Even though the criminals hanging on crosses on Jesus’ right and left were both deserving of death, one of them in his dying hour, got it right and escaped from eternal death. How did he do it?
Ask the children…
What did the thief realize about himself and what did He ask Jesus as a result?
“We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.'” (Luke 23:41, 42)
And what was Jesus’ response?
“And Jesus replied, ‘I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.'” (Luke 23:43)
The thief realized that he deserved death and could nothing to save himself. At that last moment he chose to put his faith in what Jesus could do for him. And Jesus rewarded his faith by promising the thief that he would be going to paradise with Jesus. It doesn’t matter when we turn to Christ from our own efforts, only that we do it.
Ask your children if they have put their faith in Jesus rather than their own efforts? They don’t want to wait until the end of their lives. A relationship with Jesus awaits them today.
