This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (John 1) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: The apostle John focuses on certain events that no other gospel writer’s write about (the encounter with Nicodemus, the Samaritan womant at the well, the man born blind, raising of Lazarus) for the purpose of proving that Jesus is in fact the Son of God.
One thing that God never does is to operate against the will of His children. Even when it comes to doing something that would bless them, Jesus is a gentleman. Jesus was revealing God’s kingdom through healing those who sick, but only if they wanted to be healed.
Ask the children…
What did Jesus ask the man who had been sick and lying by the pool of Bethesda?
“When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, ‘Would you like to get well?'” (John 5:6)
When the man replied that he would like to get well but was always too late to get into the healing waters, what did Jesus say to him?
“Jesus told him, ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!'” (John 5:8 )
Jesus honored this man’s desire for healing. But first he found out that healing is what this man really wanted. God always honors our will.
Ask your children if they think God is a gentleman and honors their will? How has He done that in the past for them? What is their hearts desire? Are they telling God what that is and looking to find out if they matches up with what God is doing in His kingdom?
