Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – October 27, John 6, “Walking On Water”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (John 6) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: The apostle John focuses on certain events that no other gospel writer’s write about (the encounter with Nicodemus, the Samaritan womant at the well, the man born blind, raising of Lazarus) for the purpose of proving that Jesus is in fact the Son of God.

When we look about at creation, we immediately sense the limitations upon us.  We can’t fly, we can’t breathe under water, we can’t pick up giant trees, or can we?  Maybe we need to see Jesus the way that the disciples encountered Him?

Ask the children…

What was the disciple’s reaction when they saw Jesus walking on the water?

“They had rowed three or four miles[d] when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified,’ (John 6:19)

What happened when they recognized that it was Jesus?

“but he called out to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here! 21 Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!” (John 6:20)

The disciples saw the earth around them through their human perspective.  What they couldn’t see was what would happen when heaven in the form of Jesus invaded earth.  When that happened, all the old rules could be changed.  Jesus could walk on water, the boat could move miles at a time in a second.  This is what happens when the kingdom of God starts to permeate our earthly existence.  It happens inside us as we are miraculously changed and it happens around us as earthly systems are changed.

Ask your children what things around them that they would like to change that seem impossible?  Talk to God with them about this.  Is this an area where He wants heaven to invade earth?  Begin to pray and ask Jesus to walk on water in this area.  Don’t be surprised if He does.
