This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Matthew 21) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Matthew is the first book in the New Testament and was written by Matthew to carefully document that Jesus is in fact the long awaited Messiah and fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophecies.
In this section of Matthew (Chapters 20-23) Jesus tells more parables (stories to explain the Kingdom) to assist in preparing His disciples for the difficult days ahead. He continues to show His authority as Messiah by His power over sickness and nature.
Ask the children…
Just after Jesus spoke to a fig tree and it withered right before their eyes, the disciples asked Jesus how He could do these things. What was Jesus’ amazing response?
“Then Jesus told them, ‘I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more.’” (Matthew 21:21)
How much more could the disciples do?
“You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. 22 You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.'” (Matthew 21:21-22)
We are amazed at what Jesus could do, but Jesus said to His disciples and to us that we can do even more than that. Like lifting up a mountain and having it thrown into the sea, like praying for anything and seeing it happen. All it takes is FAITH! Believing that we our heavenly Father will respond to our prayers.
Ask your children what difficulty in their lives feels like moving a mountain? If it seems too hard to pray for, why not start with praying for the faith to pray for this mountain and then use that faith to pray and ask God to move it. Let’s take Jesus at His word.
