This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Matthew 24) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Matthew is the first book in the New Testament and was written by Matthew to carefully document that Jesus is in fact the long awaited Messiah and fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophecies.
After Jesus had arrived in Jerusalem, He and His disciples were walking by the temple and the disciples commented on the temple’s beauty. Jesus said that the temple would one day be completely destroyed. When the disciples inquired when this would happen, Jesus turned their attention to a future event that was much more important than the temple’s destruction. That event would His eventual return to the earth to take His children home to be with Him and to execute judgement on those who refused to believe in Him.
Ask the children…
When the disciples wanted to know when this return would be, what did Jesus tell them?
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself.[k] Only the Father knows.” (Matthew 24:36)
What did Jesus tells His disciples they should doing now in preparation for this day?
“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. 43 Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. 44 You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.” (Matthew 24:42-44)
The GREAT news is that Jesus is coming back. The GREAT news is also that we don’t know when. Why is that GREAT? Because it means that we should be living our lives each moment always ready for that return. And that is the way it should be. Living in such close relationship with God and preparing for the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth is the purpose we were put here on earth in the first place.
Ask your children if they are looking forward to Jesus’ return? Why or why not? What does being prepared for this return mean to them? What should they be about today to be ready? Hint: It is more about BEING than doing.
