1 Corinthians 12:12-31 is the passage about how having many different types of people in the church is necessary, just like the body needs different parts to properly work.
A new way to think about this passage is like making a smoothie. You need all the types of fruit as well as the juice. Without all the elements your smoothie will not taste good because there will not be a variety of flavors. For example if you make a smoothie that is only banana, you will be overwhelmed with that flavor and probably will not like it.
To fully explain this, do an experiment with your kids making two kinds of smoothies.
Start with the simpler one.
Blend together a few bananas and water.
Next, make the more diverse one.
Blend together 1 banana, 7 strawberries, 1/3 cup greek yogurt, and a 1/4 cup grapefruit juice (or apple juice).
Have your kids drink a cup of the banana one. Ask them what they thought. Next have them drink the multi-fruit one. Ask which one they like better.
Most likely your kids will enjoy the fruit smoothie better. Explain to them this passage mentioning how if we only had one type of person in the church, it would be bland like the banana smoothie. It is because of this that God brings lots of different people to make up the church!
