Jesus’ 3 Goals For Parenting: Goal No. 2 – Our Children Would Love One Another

Jesus with his disciples

Jesus with his disciples

Jesus wanted his followers as children of God to love one another.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”  (John 13:35)

Jesus trained up his disciples just like a parent would train up their children.  These were His children and Jesus was the perfect role model of a parent.

On the night he spoke these words of love to His children, Jesus was in the upper room eating a meal with them.  He knew He would be arrested and killed in the next few days.  He could have been warning them about what to do after His death, but instead He was teaching them about the importance of loving one another.

Once the disciples had experienced the love of God for them it was a natural next step for them to love one another.  When a child is secure that they are loved unconditionally by God and can return that love, then they will learn to love the imperfect people around them.

When the world is swirling about and trying to convince us parents otherwise, remember that Jesus instilled in His children that of primary importance is loving one another.
