Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Mark. Jesus curses a fig tree (Mark 11:12-24)
This was the only miracle in which Jesus curses something. The fig tree was to serve as an illustration of how God views those who profess to have faith but do not produce any fruit.
Ask the children…
Jesus was hungry and went up to a fig tree looking for fruit. What did He find?
“Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.” (Mark 11:13)
Fig trees in that region produce green fruit and then leaves and later comes the harvest. The fact that this fig tree did not have any fruit on it showed that it would not bear any fruit in that season even though it had leaves. What did Jesus say to it and what happened?
“He said to it, ‘May no one ever eat fruit from you again!’ And His disciples were listening. As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up.” (Mark 11:14, 20)
The fig tree was to be a picture of Israel that had been given so much by God and on the outside appeared to be religious but didn’t bear any real fruit. God was rejecting this old Israel in favor of those who would put their faith in Christ and bear fruit.
Ask your children what they think it looks like to bear fruit as a Christian? What does it look like to just profess faith and not bear fruit? How are they bearing fruit? Share some fruit bearing stories in the comments below.
