Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Mark: Jesus feeds 5,000 (Luke 9:10-17; Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:31-44; John 6:1-14)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
Jesus was becoming so famous because of His miracles and teaching that people were coming from everywhere to hear Him. Even when He and His disciples tried to get some rest time together and went off in a boat to another place, the crowds met Jesus there. But Jesus loved these people and spent time teaching them and encouraging them. Because there were so many people and they were in a remote place, this presented a practical problem.
Ask the children…
What was the problem that the disciples pointed out to Jesus?
“Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.’” (Mark 6:35, 36)
What did Jesus say and how did the disciples respond?
“But Jesus said, ‘You feed them.’ ‘With what?’ they asked. ‘We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!'” (Mark 6:37)
Jesus asked the disciples to find out what food they had on hand. It surely wasn’t enough to feed all those people. What miracle did Jesus do?
“Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. ” (Mark 6:41)
Jesus not only fed those 5,000 people but there were leftovers. Now that is an amazing miracle.
Ask your children if they think Jesus can meet their needs no matter how big they may appear to be. Ask them if Jesus can meet the needs of the poor in your town. Talk to them about how Jesus can use them to meet those needs and go and do some research on where you can get involved. Please share with our blog readers what you found and where God is directing you to help feed the 5,000.
