Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Mark: Jesus heals a deaf and dumb man (Mark 7:31-37)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
After Jesus fed the 5,000 and healed the Gentile woman’s daughter, He went on a ministry tour of the cities in the Decapolis district where He did many miracles of healing.
In the Bible, we are told of a number of instances where Jesus healed those were deaf or blind. Deafness tended to exclude people from real community since they could not participate in conversation. Jesus loved to bring people into community.
Ask the children…
When the deaf and dumb (unable to speak) man was brought to Jesus, what unusual thing did Jesus do?
“Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue.” (Mark 7:33)
If that was not unusual enough, what did Jesus then say to the man’s ears and tongue?
“Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, ‘Ephphatha,’ which means, ‘Be opened!'” (Mark 7:34)
How long did it take for this man to be completely healed?
“Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly!” (Mark 7:35)
It is amazing to see all the different ways that Jesus used to heal people. Some He spoke to, some He touched, some touched Him, others were healed by a word spoken from a distance and on it goes. In this case he touched the man’s tongue with His own spit. The point is, there is no formula for healing, it is just what the Spirit of God led Jesus to do.
It is the same with us. We see a need and then ask the Spirit of God what we should do about it. The answer we get may seem crazy, but God’s ways are not our ways. Ask your children how they would feel if God told them to touch a deaf person’s ears or touch a dumb person’s tongue and then they were to tell them to be opened.
