Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Mark: Jesus heals a demon possessed boy (Matthew 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29; Luke 9:37-43)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
Immediately following the Transfiguration, Jesus, Peter, James and John came off the mountain and were confronted by a crowd. In the middle of the crowd was a man who had a demon possessed son.
Ask the children…
What were the evidences that this boy was demon possessed?
“One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, ‘Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.’” (Mark 9:17, 18 )
What did Jesus ask this man?
“’How long has this been happening?’ Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied, ‘Since he was a little boy.'” (Mark 9:21)
We know from the story that the disciples had tried to cast the demon out of the boy, but they couldn’t do it. We also know that the boy had been possessed for a long time. So would this be too difficult for the Son of God to handle?
“When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. ‘Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,’ he said. ‘I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!'” (Mark 9:25)
And the evil spirit left the boy at Jesus’ command. Why? Because Jesus is the Lord of the universe and at His command everything in all creation must obey.
Ask your children if they realize how much power they have through their words. As God’s children, they can speak the very words of Jesus. Jesus said that one of the primary ways that we speak His words is through faith filled prayer. Take some time to pray about the biggest issue that your kids can think of and speak the outcome you believe God wants and say it with the authority of Jesus.
