Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of John: Jesus heals a man born blind, Part 1 (John 9:1-41)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
Jesus was constantly being harrassed by the religious leadership, the Saduccees and the Pharisees. They could not believe that Jesus was God and therefore either discounted His miracles or attributed them to Satan. They were always seeking for ways to turn people away from Jesus. On this occasion, Jesus had just finished a series of confrontations with the religous leaders. In one of these confrontations Jesus had declared Himself the “Light of the world”. This particular miracle and debate highlighted Jesus’ authority to make such a claim and the religious leaders unbelief.
Ask the children…
What did Jesus find along the way?
“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. ” (John 9:1))
Jesus’ disciples attributed this to this man’s sin or his parents. Jesus disagreed, what did He say was the purpose of this blindness?
“’It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,’ Jesus answered. ‘This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.'” (John 9:3)
What unusual thing did Jesus do and unusual thing he requested this man to do?
“Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. He told him, ‘Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam’ (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing! ‘” (John 9:6, 7)
Jesus was in fact the ‘light of the world’ and He could turn on the light so a blind man could see. Again Jesus did not heal instantaneously, but used natural things in the process, a bit of mud spread on the eyes and water from a pool. Jesus used this blindness to reveal that He was undeniably the God of universe.
Ask your children what it means to them that Jesus is the ‘Light of the world’. Ask them how Jesus shows this light today. Share this in the comments section for other children to see.
