Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Matthew: Jesus walks on the water (Matthew 14:22-36; Mark 6:45-54; John 6:15-21)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
After the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus sent the people home and told His disciples to get back in their boat and cross to the other side of the lake. Jesus himself stayed there so He could get some alone time to pray. But something very strange happened that night.
Ask the children…
What was the life threatening problem that the disciples were having?
“Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves.” (Matthew 14:24)
What miraculous thing did Jesus do so because He cared for the disciples?
“About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.'” (Matthew 14:25)
How did the disciples respond?
“When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, ‘It’s a ghost!'” (Matthew 14:26)
How did Jesus encourage them?
“But Jesus spoke to them at once. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘Take courage. I am here!'” (Matthew 14:27)
Jesus was there when the disciples needed Him. No matter how difficult the circumstance, Jesus was there and reminded the disciples they did not need to be afraid.
Jesus is always there for us too. Ask your children what circumstance they can remember when they needed Jesus and he came and took away their fears. Thank Jesus together that He was there. He has promised that. Share with other readers of this blog what that circumstance was and how Jesus ‘walked on the water’ for you.
