Today let’s focus on teaching kids a Bible miracle from the book of Acts. A great earthquake frees Paul and Silas from prison in the middle of the night. (Acts 16:16-33)
Paul and Silas had preached the gospel in Philippi and cast a demon out of a slave girl. As a result the city was stirred up by her masters and Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown in jail.
Ask the children?
What were Paul and Silas doing even when they were in prison?
“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” (Acts 16:25)
What miracle to God respond with?
“Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!” (Acts 16:26)
How did the jailer respond and what happened to him?
“The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, ‘Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!’ Then he brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ (Acts 16:27, 28, 30)
God not only miraculously freed all the prisoners, but He freed the jailer from the prison of sin. Notice that the earthquake didn’t destroy the prison, only opened the doors. Also, Paul had mercy on the jailer who was going to kill himself because he thought everyone had escaped, but instead he received mercy.
Isn’t God good! He wants to miraculously bring His good news to everyone.
Ask your children if they know of anyone who’s life is being shaken up like an earthquake? Or look in the news for a recent disaster. Pray with your children that God would use these ‘earthquake’ events to bring people to the place where they would cry out “what must I do to be saved?”
