Today let’s teach a kid’s devotional from the Gospel parables (stories). God speaks through John the Baptist for the people to clear the way for the coming of Jesus. (Luke 3:4-6)
John the Baptist came out of the wilderness preaching about a coming savior and that the people need to be prepared. He said there were many obtacles in their path.
“He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming!
Clear the road for him!'” (Luke 3:4)
John quoted the prophet Isaiah when he said these words.
Ask the children …
What was the second obtstacle that was in the road keeping people from coming to Jesus?
“and the mountains and hills made level.” (Luke 3:5b)
Pride is a great mountain in the way of our coming to Jesus. Here John was specifically referring to the pride of the religious leaders (the Pharisees). They boasted that they were better than others because they kept the man made law. They thought they had special privileges with God because they were religious.
Jesus on the other hand came as a lowly baby completely dependent upon man and God. He lived a poor carpenter’s life. He wasn’t well educated in the schools of the day and lived a humble life. His example of humility is the way our hearts must be if we want to come to Him.
Ask the children if there is any pride in their lives about what they look like, or about their talents or things they own. Remind them that these are mountains that keep them from a deeper friendship with Jesus. Pray with them and ask Jesus to tear down mountains.
