Kid’s Devotionals On Parables – Don’t Be A Snake

John The Baptist

Today let’s teach a kid’s devotional from one of the Gospel parables (stories). John called the religious leaders a brood of snakes. (Mark 3:7-9)

John the Baptist came out of the wilderness preaching about a coming savior and that the people need to be prepared. When the religious leaders, the Pharisees and Saduccees came to him, he spoke hard words to them.

Ask the children …

Why would John call the religious leaders snakes?

“But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them. ‘You brood of snakes!’ he exclaimed.” (Matthew 3:7)

Because these men had a vicious and selfish spirit, instead of leading men to hope in a loving God they were only causing pain and sadness.

What did John say they needed to do to avoid judgment by God?

“‘Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.'”  (Matthew 3:8 )

John cared that these men were under God’s judgment.  What did these leaders rely on for their safety from judgment and was this going to save them?

“Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.” (Matthew 3:9)

Ask your children if they had any choice what family they were born into?  God chooses His children based upon their heart attitude not their family line.  Ask them where their heart is today?  Is it for God or for themselves?  Pray and ask God for a heart for God.
