One day Jesus was teaching His followers about what happens to those who are obedient to His word versus those who are disobedient.
Ask the children…
What did Jesus compare people to who listen and follow his word? What happens to those people when life gets really difficult?
“‘Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.'” (Matthew 7:24, 25)
Listening to Jesus and following His words is like living on solid rock. Rock doesn’t get washed away when the storms of life hit, it is secure and so are Jesus’ followers. What did Jesus compare those who disobey His words to? What happens to them when the storms of life come?
“‘But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.’” (Matthew 7:26, 27)
Share with your children an example of living on the sand from your own life or maybe from someone famous who’s house has collapsed due to disobedience. For those of you who follow golf, you could use the example of Tiger Woods who was unfaithful to his marriage and destroyed it. Ask your children if their house is built on the sand of disobedience or the rock of obedience? Help them think of examples of both and then pray together and rejoice in their rock work or repent for their slip sliding in sand.
