John told a parable (story) and called Jesus the bridegroom. What did he mean by this? (John 3:28-30)
John the Baptist came out of the wilderness preaching about a coming savior and that the people need to be prepared. John explained that he was only the messenger and that someone greater was coming.
Ask the children …
What was the role God had given to John?
“You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.’’” (John 3:28)
Why did John refer to Jesus as the bridegroom? Why does John refer to himself as the best man?
“It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the best man is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows.” (John 3:29)
This year we are going to have a wedding in our family. All the focus in our family is going to be in preparing for the wedding of the bridegroom and bride. Jesus was the bridegroom sent for his bride (the church). John was a friend (the best man) helping to prepare for the wedding. The focus on the wedding is not on the best man but on the bridegroom and his bride.
Remind your children that they are the bride of Christ. He is their loving bridegroom who laid down His life for them. Take out your wedding album or go online and look at wedding pictures and show your and children the photos and tell your children how you and your spouse felt on that day. Ask your children how they think a bride feels like on her wedding day? Ask them how they feel like as the bride of Christ? Thank Jesus that He is your bridegroom.
