After Jesus called Matthew the tax collector to follow Him, Matthew threw a big party for Jesus with all of his friends.
Ask the children…
The followers of John the Baptist had a problem with all the celebrating that Jesus and His followers were doing, what was it?
“One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him, ‘Why don’t your disciples fast[f] like we do and the Pharisees do?'” (Matthew 9:14)
John the Baptists followers were fasting and mourning over the Jewish people’s disregard for God and His commandments. They couldn’t figure out why Jesus’ followers would be celebrating.
How did Jesus answer and explain their celebrating?
“Jesus replied, ‘Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”’ (Matthew 9:15)
Jesus is the groom at this wedding. He had come to take His bride (those who believed in Him) and free her from sin and give her new life. This was cause for celebration. Jesus was the answer to why John’s followers were mourning.
Ask your children when is a good time to celebrate with Jesus? Have them read Philippians 4:4. Anytime is a good time to rejoice. Why not do some celebrating right now with your children and sing and dance and make merry to the Lord.
