Kid’s Devotions On Parables – Sparrows And The Hairs On Your Head

Jesus told a parable (story) about how God values people by using the example of sparrows and the hairs on our heads. What did he mean by this? (Matthew 10:29-31)

When Jesus told His disciples that they would face much opposition as they went out preach about the kingdom of God, they were afraid.  Then Jesus told them not be afraid because of something else.

Ask the children…

How valuable are inexpensive sparrows in God’s eyes?  How valuable are we compared to sparrows?

“‘What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin[k]? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it..So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.'” (Matthew 10:29, 31)

How many hairs are on your head?  God knows.

“‘And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.'” (Matthew 10:30)

So even the things in this life, sparrows and hairs on our heads, that would seem to be of little value, God knows all about and places great value on them.  How much more valuable than those things are our lives to God?

Ask your kids on a day when they are totally obedient how valuable are they to God on a scale of 1 to 10? Now ask your kids on a day whey they are completely disobedient how valuable are they to God?   Surprise!  It doesn’t matter.  We are infinitely valuable to God and so is every other person.  Have them carry a penny in their pocket today and every time they touch it remember that they are more valuable than all the money in the world to God.
