Jesus had been traveling from city to city and preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing all who came to Him. He looked out at the crowds of hurting and lost people and spoke to His disciples…
Ask the children…
What was the problem with the harvest? What did Jesus ask His disciples to do?
“He said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.'” (Matthew 9:37)
Jesus saw a great harvest but there was a problem. There weren’t enough workers to bring in the harvest. So many people who wanted to come into the kingdom but not enought people to tell them about the love of God for them and gift of His Son for them.
Jesus didn’t tell the disciples to go out and start gathering in the harvest, He told them to pray that the Lord, the Lord of the harvest, would send out the workers. Why didn’t Jesus just tell the disciples to start harvesting? Several reasons: 1) They were only a few and there were many more needed to reach the whole harvest so prayer was the place to start; 2) They needed to be sent by the Lord of the harvest to those people that had been selected for them. When you harvest a field you have a plan and send laborers to different parts of the field. It is God’s job to direct and we learn that direction through prayer.
Ask your children if God has sent them into the harvest? Who do they think God has sent them to? What can they do to share the good news of the kingdom with those lost sheep and how can they show the love of God to them? Pray with your children to send out more workers into His harvest and to send them out too.
