Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Matthew. When Jesus rose from the grave a great earthquake happened (Matthew 28:1, 2).
iAfter Jesus had hung for 3 hours on the cross with darkness covering the whole earth and the sins of the world resting upon Him, 3 miraculous things happened. Let’s look at the second of those.
Ask the children…
What did Jesus do that no one has done before or since?
“Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit.” (Matthew 27:50)
Jesus was the first person who was capable of giving up his spirit to the Father and choosing the time of his death. As with everything else in Jesus’ life, he was in control of what was happening, not those who had nailed him to the cross. This was all part of God’s plan. To confirm this, 3 miracles happened at this same moment. What was the second?
“At that moment…the earth shook, rocks split apart, .” (Matthew 27:51)
If you have ever been in an earthquake you will know it is a very strange feeling. I live in California and we have earthquakes pretty regularly. One I can remember the most vividly happened as I was sitting on my back porch. All of the sudden everything began to sway back and forth. Even the brick wall in my back yard began to sway in the breeze like it was a sheet hanging out to dry. I actually got sick to my stomach because I wasn’t used to feeling the earth move like that. Everything that my brain told me was supposed to be stable and unmoveable had begun to move.
That is what happened that day at Calvary. God had changed the world by having His Son die on the cross. He had moved heaven and earth to make this happen. Now He showed that movement by shaking the earth. Earthquakes were not normal in that region. Everyone would have been afraid when they felt the earth move and saw rocks split. God was attesting that this was His Son’s death had changed the world.
Ask your children what they think an earthquake feels like and have them stand up and act it out? Ask them what it would have been like to have been there on that day and what they would have said? Pray with them and thank God that although He changed and shook the world that day, that His love never changes and we can count on Him when our world feels like it is unstable.
