One Year Study Through The Bible For Kids – March 11, Judges 16

Samson

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Judges 16) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: After the nation of Israel took control of the Promised Land, Joshua their leader died and the 12 tribes were left to completely conquer their remaining enemies in the lands they had been allotted. The 12 tribes fell away from worshipping God and God therefore allowed their enemies to defeat them. When Israel finally cried out to God for help, God sent Judges (leaders) to help them. One of these Judges was named Samson and he reminds us that despite foolish mistakes we make, God is a God of second chances.

Ask the children…

Samson was given super strength by the Lord that he used to defend Israel from the Philistines.  God told Samson not to cut his hair, for long hair symbolized that Samson was devoted to God.  When Samson let his hair be cut, God left Samson and so did his strength.

What happened to Samson after that?

“So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and forced to grind grain in the prison.’” (Judges 16:21)

Later, Samson was brought into a great hall by the Philistines so they could laugh at this man who had been their great enemy.  What did Samson ask for and what happened?

“‘Sovereign Lord, remember me again. O God, please strengthen me just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.’ 29 Then Samson put his hands on the two center pillars that held up the temple. Pushing against them with both hands, 30 he prayed, ‘Let me die with the Philistines.’ And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime.’” (Judges 16:28-30)

Samson was given one last chance to serve the Lord and he did.  God loves to give people second chances when they humble their hearts and ask God for a second chance.

Ask your children where they need a second chance?  Is there something they have failed at the first time or something they didn’t do or something they did but had a bad attitude?  Have them go to God and ask for a second chance and then support them to get that second chance and see what God does.
