One Year Study Through The Bible For Kids – March 13, Judges 7 – 8

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Judges 7, 8 ) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: After the taking of their Promised Land under the leadereship of Joshua, the people of the nation of Israel fell into rebellion and were defeated by their enemies. During that time God sent Judges (leaders) to help them. One particular Judge was named Gideon.  Gideon had to trust God because the odds for victory were against him.  His enemy had 135,000 soldiers and Gideon had…

Ask the children…

What did God say to Gideon to reduce the number of soldiers he had?  How many soldiers did Gideon end up with?

“Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain[a] and go home.’” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight.(Judges 7:3)

Next God had Gideon take the 10,000 left to a stream.  He told Gideon that only those soldiers who picked up the water in their cupped hands and drank could stay with him and fight.  How many were left after that?

“Only 300 of the men drank from their hands. All the others got down on their knees and drank with their mouths in the stream.” (Judges 7:6)

What did God say about the odds of 135,000 enemy soldiers against 300 of Gideon’s army?

“The Lord told Gideon, ‘With these 300 men I will rescue you and give you victory over the Midianites. Send all the others home.’” (Judges 7:7)

God wanted Gideon to put his trust only in God and not man.  No one could say after the battle that Gideon had won the battle, they could only point to God.  By they way, God did win this battle but you will have to read the story yourselves.

Ask your children what battles they are having to fight that the odds are against them?  Remind them that with God on their sides they will be the victors.

Feel free to share your own stories below in the comments section.
