One Year Study Thru The Bible – April 23, 2 Chronicles 10, Unwise Advice

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (2 Chronicles 10) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The second book of Chronicles was written to encourage God’s people who had been exiled to Babylon and were wondering if God was still for them. After King Solomon’s death, his son Rehoboam comes to the throne.  King Rehoboam makes a serious mistake right at the outset of his reign.  Let’s see what it was?

Ask the children…

What foolish mistake did Rehoboam make?

“But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.”  (2 Chronicles 10:8 )

These older men had advised Rehoboam’s father King Solomon.  If Solomon, the wisest man in the world, listenend to this older men, then Rehoboam was incredibly foolish to ignore them.

What did the younger men advise King Rehoboam to do when the people asked for lighter burdens and lower taxes?

“The young men replied, ‘This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden: My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! 11 Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!'” (2 Chronicles 10:10, 11)

And King Rehoboam foolishly told the people what these young advisors told him to and as a result the poeple rejected them as king of the 10 northern tribese of Israel and the kingdom was split for the first time.

Ask your children who they turn to as older and wiser advisors?  Ask them what poor advice they may have received from some younger people?  Ask them if there is any decision they are currently making where they could benefit from advice?  Who are they going to turn to?
