This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (2 Kings 17) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: During the period of Israel’s history when the nation was divided in two and the kings who ruled were generally evil, God did not leave His people without a testimony to His presence and power. But the people wouldn’t listen and God punished them with the consequences for their sin.

Ask the children…

What did God’s people ignore and what did they do that was displeasing to God?

“They sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them safely out of Egypt and had rescued them from the power of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. They had followed the practices of the pagan nations the Lord had driven from the land ahead of them, as well as the practices the kings of Israel had introduced.” (2 Kings 17:7, 8 )

What else did God’s people ignore?

“Again and again the Lord had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: ‘Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and decrees—the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that I gave you through my servants the prophets.’” (2 Kings 17:13)

What consequence to God give them for their sin?

“The Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel. He punished them by handing them over to their attackers until he had banished Israel from his presence.”  (2 Kings 17:20)

Ask your children how they feel when they are punished with consequences for their disobedience? Ask them why there are consequences for disobedience?  God provides consequences to get our attention and to encourage us to turn back to Him.  Ask your children if there are any areas of disobedience they want to confess to the Lord right now?  Pray with them so they can receive the Lord’s forgiveness and cleansing.
