Background: The book of Chronicles was written to encourage God’s people who had been exiled to Babylon and were wondering if God was still for them. This first section of Chronicles describes David’s ascent to the throne after King Saul is killed by the Philistines. In this chapter David’s Mighty Men are named and some of their marvelous deeds of heroism are remembered.
Ask the children…
What heroic deed to Benaiah do?
“There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions[h] of Moab.” (1 Chronicles 11:22)
What other heroic deeds did Benaiah do?
“Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. 23 Once, armed only with a club, he killed an Egyptian warrior who was 7 1⁄2 feet[i] tall and whose spear was as thick as a weaver’s beam. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with it.” (1 Chronicles 11:22, 23)
God raised up Mighty Men like Benaiah to support David’s Kingship. He is raising up Mighty Men and Women today to support His work here on earth.
Ask your children if they know of any Mighty Men or Women? These might be family members or people in your church or others you have read about in the news. Ask them what Mighty Deeds the Lord is calling them to? Pray and ask for the Lord’s strength to embark on a Mighty Deed today. Remind them that King David had many Mighty Men who worked together so they don’t have to do this alone.
