Background: The book of Chronicles was written to encourage God’s people who had been exiled to Babylon and were wondering if God was still for them. This section of Chronicles describes God’s’ blessing on King David’s royal line. God told David that He would establish his dynasty and kingdom forever.
Ask the children…
How did David respond to this incredible promise from God?
“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great,[c] O Lord God!” (1 Chronicles 17:16, 17)
David was incredibly humble in his prayer and attributed the blessings to God. What else did David pray?
“O Lord, there is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you! 21 What other nation on earth is like your people Israel? What other nation, O God, have you redeemed from slavery to be your own people? You made a great name for yourself when you redeemed your people from Egypt.” (1 Chronicles 17:20, 21)
David was careful to give God the praise for all that had happened to Israel. It is so easy for us to begin to think that God’s blessing is about us and not return the praise to God who really deserves it.
Ask your children what blessings they have received from God recently? Ask them if they have given God the praise for those blessings or kept those blessings to themselves? Stop and pray with them right now and have a prayer party of praises to God for His blessings.
