Background: King David’s son Solomon has ascended to the throne and has fulfilled his father’s wish, to build a temple for the Lord in Jerusalem. At the completion of the temple, Solomon prays to God and repeats a particular phrase over and over.
Ask the children…
What phrase did Solomon repeat over and over to God?
“Yes, hear us from heaven where you live, and when you hear, forgive.” (1 Kings 8:30)
“then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel.” (1 Kings 8:34)
“then hear from heaven and forgive the sins of your servants.” (1 Kings 8:36)
As Solomon dedicates the temple he prays to God such a prayer for his people. He realizes that there will be times in the future when the people turn their backs on God. He prays that when they finally repent and turn back to God that He will hear them from heaven and forgive them for their sins and restore them.
Repenting and ask God for forgiveness is such an important part of our Christian faith. Explain to your children how Jesus died for our sins so we could come to God any time and ask for forgiveness no matter what we have done. Ask them if there is anything they need to repent of in their lives? If so, pray a prayer of repentance with them right now just like Solomon did and experience God’s forgiveness.
