Background: The second book of Chronicles was written to encourage God’s people who had been exiled to Babylon and were wondering if God was still for them. This section describes God’s response to Solomon’s prayer of dedication of the temple and specifically to Solomon’s plea for God to hear from heaven when the people repent of their sins and turn back to God.
Ask the children…
Solomon knows that in the future the people will disobey God and they will be punished. In this prayer numerous times Solomon asks God to “hear their prayers heaven” when His people repent of their inevitable sin. How does God respond?
“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
The land symbolized the very lives of the people. When God said He would heal their land it meant that He would provide them with rain and good harvests and protection from enemies and a good life.
How often will God hear His people’s prayers?
“My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place.” (2 Chronicles 7:15)
So God hears every prayer made to Him and He will forgive those who genuinely ask for forgiveness and turn from their sin and will restore their lives.
Ask your children how they feel about approaching God when they sin? What happens if they hold onto their sin and don’t ask for forgiveness? Spend some time thanking God for His loving forgiveness and willingness to hear all of our prayers and to restore our lives.
