This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (1 Kings 14) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: After the reign of King Solomon and his disobedience to God in the latter part of his life, God’s people are split into a northern and southern kingdom.  A long line of kings come and go as rulers over each kingdom.  Most of these kings do not follow the Lord and God punishes these kingdoms as a result.  One evil king, Jeroboam, has a son who becomes deathly sick and asks his wife to go in disguise to inquire of a prophet of God what will happen to his son.

Ask the children…

The old blind prophet knew it was Jeroboam’s wife because God told him.  What did the prophet say to King Jeroboam’s wife?

“You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made other gods for yourself and have made me furious with your gold calves.” (1 Kings 14:9)

What did the prophet say that God would do to her and her family?

“And since you have turned your back on me, 10 I will bring disaster on your dynasty and will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel. I will burn up your royal dynasty as one burns up trash until it is all gone.” (1 Kings 14:9, 10)

The nation of Israel went from the blessed followers of God who were established in their promised land under God’s leadership to a divided kingdom ruled by human kings and who no longer worshipped and obeyed God.  As a result God removed His blessing and brought evil upon them so they would repent and turn back to Him.

Ask your children if they have any areas in their lives where they are disobeying God?  Encourage them to repent and experience Christ’s forgiveness and allow God back into that area of their lives.  See if they don’t realize the blessing of peace in their hearts right away.
